NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Richmond sophomore Nick Sherod and VCU senior Justin Tillman have been selected as the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Basketball Co-Players of the Week, while Richmond redshirt freshman Grant Golden was chosen as the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards, announced Monday, are for games played Jan. 22-28.
Sherod totaled 38 points, 20 rebounds, seven assists and three blocks while shooting 58 percent from the field in a pair of road wins for Richmond. Wednesday at Duquesne, Sherod exploded for 15 points in the game’s final 12 minutes as the Spiders won in overtime, thanks to the guard’s game-winning field goal on a turnaround jumper with 32 seconds remaining. The Richmond, Va., native finished with a career-high 28 points and added six rebounds. Saturday at Davidson, Sherod registered a career and game-high 14 rebounds. Sherod also scored 10 points and recorded a career-high four assists as the Spiders won their fifth straight game to move into second place in the A-10.
Tillman turned in a pair of double-doubles in road victories over Saint Louis and George Mason. He averaged 21.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and shot .543 from the floor in two wins. He began the week with a 25-point, 12-rebound outburst at Saint Louis, shooting 12-of-21 (.571) with two steals against the Billikens. Then on the road at long-time rival George Mason, he had 18 points, 11 rebounds and was 7-for-14 from the field (.500). The forward from Detroit now owns 11 double-doubles this season.
Golden registered back-to-back 20-point games and shot 57 percent from the field in the Spiders’ two road victories. Golden scored 21 points and a team-high nine rebounds at Duquesne, including a bucket and free throw with 15 seconds left that gave Richmond a two-point lead and eventually led to overtime and a Spider win. The forward from Winchester, Va., also registered a career-high three steals in the game. Golden then scored a game-high 24 points while hitting 11-of-15 (.733) from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers at Davidson.

Davidson’s Peyton Aldridge averaged 21 points and six rebounds while shooting .533 (16-of-30) for the week … Josh Cunningham continued his torrid shooting for Dayton, hitting 13-of-19 (.684) scoring 15 points against Davidson and 16 at Saint Louis … UD freshman Jalen Crutcher averaged 13 points and 4.5 assists last week, including a six-assist performance in a win over Davidson … Duquesne freshman Eric Williams, Jr. had 25 points and eight rebounds in the overtime loss to Richmond, and grabbed 10 boards at Rhode Island … Prokop Slanina tallied a 19-point, 10-rebound double-double for Fordham against Massachusetts, while also dishing out three assists and grabbing two steals … Fordham freshman Ivan Raut had 16 points, five rebounds and four assists while shooting .625 (5-of-8) from the field in the win over UMass … George Mason freshman A.J. Wilson had 10 points , two blocks and a steal, hitting 3-of-5 from the field (.600) versus VCU … Amar Stukes matched his career high with 22 points and added four assists as La Salle earned a win over Massachusetts … Stanford Robinson scored 16 points and had seven steals in a win at Fordham, and then was the hero against Duquesne, drilling a game-winning buzzer-beater to give Rhode Island it’s 12th straight win … St. Bonaventure’s Courtney Stockard had a 15-point, 13 rebounds double-double in a win over Saint Joseph’s, tallying four assists, and a 12-point, seven-rebounds performance with three assists in the GW win … Javon Bess of Saint Louis had back-to-back 20-point games with eight rebounds against VCU and four rebounds and four assists in a win over Dayton.
